Welcome To The Food Justice Movement

Featured, Food

What if you didn’t have access to fresh food based on the color of your skin or economic status? Sadly this is the reality for too many humans on our planet.

Most humans care about their health and the ability to access good food when we are hungry. This is one of the many reasons, if not the most important one, when realizing why food justice is so important!

Food Justice is communities exercising their right to grow, sell, and eat healthy food. Healthy food is fresh, nutritious, affordable, culturally appropriate and grown locally with care for the well-being of the land, workers, and animals.

The Food Justice Movement is inspired by some of the life changing movements that have come before it, including the Civil Rights Movement and Environmental Justice Movement.

The Food Justice Movement is a grassroots initiative emerging from communities in response to food insecurity and economic pressures that prevent access to healthy, nutritious, and culturally appropriate foodsand the awareness that food is the best matched and healthiest when matched with the cultural background of the people consuming it.

Food justice recognizes the food system as a racial project and problematizes the influence of race and class on the production, distribution and consumption of food. This encompasses farm labor work, land disputes, issues of status and class, environmental justice, public politics, and advocacy.

Food justice is closely connected to food sovereignty, which critiques structural barriers communities of color who face challenges accessing local and organic foods. This is largely due to institutional racism and the lack of economic equality.
